169 Seconds: The Wonder of Illusory Depth Cues – the use of depth cues in the opening scene of Sebastian Lelios The Wonder

In Sebastian Lelios The Wonder from 2022 the initial camera movement quite literally takes us from the film studio where the film is shot and into the world of the English nurse Elizabeth Wright in 18th century Ireland. This installment of 169 Seconds analyzes how the compositional strategies employed support the move from the bleak and flat reality of the film studio to a fictional deep space worth being lured into by using illusory depth cues as described by Bruce Block in his book The Visual Story – Creating the Visual Structure of Film, TV and Digital Media.
